Mdina Knights brush aside Xghajra for first points of the season

Tuesday, 26 September 2017 23:48 PM
Mdina Knights FC collected their first points of the 2017/18 BOV MFA 3rd Division league on Sunday evening with a resounding 3-0 victory over Xghajra Tornadoes FC.

It wasn't a match full of highlights, but the Knights did enough to keep Xghajra at bay for most of the night, the Tornadoes only having two near chances over 90 minutes of football.

Sam Bartolo opening the scoring on 15 minutes when the opposition goalkeeper Luke Attard couldn't get a clean set of hands to a well-placed shot and the ball bounced in for the opening score.

A series of half chances saw the Knights head into the dressing rooms at half time with a slender 1-nil lead, and surely their focus as they headed back onto the pitch was to close out the match as early as they could to prevent any similar outcomes to the first one where they gave up a 1-0 half time lead one week earlier.

The second half was patchy, and ultimately it wasn't until second half substitute Chris Farrugia fired home a loose ball that Xghajra couldn't clean up inside the six-yard box before the Knights could breathe a sigh of relief.

Xghajra tried to mount a comeback but they never truly threatened Justin Tonna's end.

Less than two minutes from time, Andrea Spiteri sent a beautiful pigeon of a free kick into the top right of goals to secure a comfortable 3-0 result and three points for the boys in red.

Mdina Knights head coach Renzo Kerr-Cumbo was by no means getting carried away with the result, commenting after the match that his main focus was for his young side to become more fluent.

“I think the league is very balanced. Every game can be won 3-0 and every game can be lost 3-0. That’s what I told the boys today”.

“And it’s not just us, it’s the same for every team. Every match is going to be about how much we put in and who’s going to put the quality in”.

Renzo admitted that despite the 3-0 result, there was a patchy period in the second half.

“I think we struggled a bit for 20 minutes in that second half. We weren’t in the right place at the right time”.

“I want us to focus on playing football first. The results will come later. The word I’ve been using in the dressing room is fluency. How fluent are we?”.

“No, I'm not happy with the fluency today. But I can’t expect fluency to come about in two matches. This will come with time with the players playing more football together”.
